3Decent boat, poor quality control, excellent customer service
By Craig Strong
(8/7/11) I own four other inflatable boats including a pontoon boat, a Stearns canoe and a Sevylor whitewater kayak. These are $500-800 boats. I bought the K1 because I want something I can pack on my bike or pack in to mountain lakes on my back.

THE GOOD: The boat alone weighed in at 12 pounds and the paddle and pump add little weight though I did not weigh them. I took the K1 out today and found that it was very impressive on the water. It was stable to the point that I would be comfortable fly fishing from it on calm lakes and paddling in small waves wou ld not make me nervous. I wou ld not take it on a river with any amount of rapids, though. If given enough pressure, the seat back is fairly supportive. I'm 6' 1" and I was able to put my feet against the end of the recessed area beyond the foot braces for a very comfortable braced position. I'd be a bit concerned for shorter paddlers that the bumps that are there for foot braces would do little or nothing to help keep them secure if the water got choppy. I was pleased that the seating position was dryer than I'd anticipated. Overall very comfortable. The boat tracked a lot better than my whitewater kayak and at least a well as my inflatable canoe. The odd valves are workable but not the easiest to get a good, firm amount of pressure, especially when using the included pump (see below).

THE BAD: Unfortunately, the K1 had some significant quality issues. The first issue I encountered was the pump's hose-end fittings don't fit either of the valve sizes on this boat. I was able to put a few wraps of tape around the big nozzle so it would press into the valve securely but the small nozzle was not salvageable without significant modification and I resorted to using my breath to blow up the small chambers. The second issue was that two of the three fittings glued into the PVC at the front of the boat were glued in in the wrong orientation such that the cargo net is not secure and actually pulls itself free by it's own elasticity. I'm sure that this varies from boat to boat and originates with bad design that allows these anchors to be oriented wrong in assembly (if it can be done wrong, it will be done wrong a good deal of the time, regardless of where it is manufactured).

CONCLUSION: If it were not for the two issues I had with my boat I would be thrilled with my purchase. I'd be willing to modify one of the smaller pump nozzles with my pocket knife to make it fit the small valves securely and tape on the big nozzle worked fine (too bad the small nozzles press over the big nozzle so the tape can't be left on). I can fix the cargo net issue too but it won't be elegant by any stretch of the imagination. These two issues make for a very disappointing purchase. I just wish I'd bought this from Amazon as I doubt that the manufacturer will send me a prepaid shipping label or make the return process nearly as easy as It would be here.

UPDATE (9/7/11): Coleman had me cut out the valves and send them a photo of the mutilated boat so that they would not have to replace a second boat on warranty. They immediately sent me an entirely new boat including all accessories in retail packaging. This boat had the fittings for the net mesh glued in properly. Unfortunately, the hose end fittings on the pump were the same as the first boat and were useless, without modification, for filling any of the compartments with air. I have another pump with the correct hose end fittings for this boat so not a big deal for me.

Two new issues with the replacement boat:

1. one of the welded seams had a nearly 1" gap where it was not welded. So, the compartment that you sit on loses air (slower than you would think for the size of the gap).
2. the plugs in the valves on this second boat do not fit tightly. They push in place barely tight enough to keep enough air in the boat so that it is not soft. The first boat pumped up very tight and stayed that way with the well fitting caps to the valves.

Coleman has asked me to cut up this boat and send them photos again. What a waste.

UPDATE (9/12/11): Third boat came, no defects. Pump hose fittings still don't fit valves properly. Cut off one of the smaller fittings to push into the small valves and now it holds tight. Worked fine. Still have to wrap tape around the big nozzle to get it to fit the big valves properly. Coleman CS says that there is a piece that pulls off to make that fit. I don't see it. Regardless, I have three pumps now and can change the hose such that I can use just one pump and one hose for small valves, one hose for big valves.

I will not hesitate to purchase a Coleman, Stearns or Sevylor product again based on very responsive customer service I received when I had these problems. If I'm unsure that I want to keep the product and would like to use it before making up my mind I will buy from Amazon as their return policy is more generous.

5best boat I've ever had!
By mac
I live in Canada (Vancouver Island, BC) so I had to go across the border at Blaine to pick up my boat but it has been well worth while. I was looking for a boat light enough for me to carry down to the beach by myself and still be able to carry back after an hour of paddling and this boat fills the bill. I have a nice little fiberglass kayak but it is now too heavy for me. I used to have a 2 person Sevylor but it would not track properly. This one is slower than the fiberglass one but tracks well and as I only want to paddle around the bay I live on it suits me well. I was worried about sittin on top but it actually feels much better to me than sitting down inside the other ones. It is attracting a lot of attention from others at the beach and it is so much fun. The seat is really comfortable and gives great support. It seems completely stable even with a bit of a breeze and a few waves. I didn't really like the 3 piece paddle but I have another 2 piece paddle from my other boat that works well. The pump that comes with it is also good.

5Better than you'd think!
By Rosalee Clayton
This kayak is bigger than it looks. It sits in level the water. It is better than expected. It handles like a small kayak and manuvers very well! The air chambers are well constructed and I didn't have to add air even after 3 days of use. The back support did not collapse and supports nicely. The air pump included worked well, but I used a Coleman 12 volt to air up the first time. The included paddle will suffice, but I prefer a stronger one. All said, this is a fun, light weight easy to pack and use kayak. I love it!
